CDs and DVDs are still used by a lot of people, even though they were released a long time ago. The reasons for this are various. Optical discs can store a large quantity of data, being cheap at the same time and being supported by a lot of media devices. But the problem with optical discs is that they are not so reliable, being very sensitive to scratches and dust. Even the tiniest scratch can compromise the data stored on a disc and can make it unreadable.

That's why it's a good idea to back up all the data from your optical disc collection and store it on the hard disk, so that in case a disc cannot be properly read anymore, you will have a backup on your computer. A program which allows you to create disc images is Phantom Drive. Installing this Windows program is not a problem and should be completed fast on most computer configurations.

After installing the program, the user will be presented with a welcome window, in which he can easily select one of the program's features. The first feature allows creating images from any kind of disc, including the newest Blu-ray format. Phantom Drive can create disc images in the PHI format, but also supports the standard ISO file format.

After the image is created, the user will be able to open it and view its files or burn it to a blank disc using any regular burning software. Opening an image file can be done directly in Windows Explorer, thanks to Phantom Drive, as it adds a virtual optical drive in My Computer. Unfortunately, there is support only for the PHI and ISO formats.

Pros

It allows you to easily create disc images from any kind of optical disc, including Blu-ray. Besides that, disc images can be opened directly in Windows Explorer or My Computer, by accessing a virtual drive.

Cons

It only supports the PHI and ISO file formats for creating and opening disc images. Phantom Drive allows you to easily create images from any kind of optical disc and open them directly into Windows Explorer.
